We’re into the start of July and the temperatures have reached their peak of mid to high 90’s the Walleye are eating a lot, post spawn and all their ready to get their bellies full! You’d think they’d be beef up, but that hasn’t been the case thus far. Spoke to a close fishing friend let’s just call him Nate about his recent trips to Chatfield over the last couple of weeks, while he’s been successful with over 20 fish days the fish don’t have any real size to them, mostly skinny fish with no bellies. Is this something we should be concerned? Or is too early in the season to worry about?
The answer to both is yes and yes. In my experience I’ve caught some of the bigger Walleye pre-spawn and later in the summer closer to August. It is alarming that the fish have been so skinny, usually means their not feeding on the shad heavily, which is concerning, you’d think that would be their primary food source. We’ll have to see whether the size of the fish improves or not by late summer before we hit the panic button. We’ll be sure to keep you posted.
