July 14th, 2017 Fishing Report
Fishing at 11 Mile Canyon South Platte continues to be lights out! I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun fly fishing a stretch of any river. The last 3 miles of the river that is flies and lures only and catch and release is on fire. Nymphing will be the best way to fish the river, dry fly success all depends on if you can trick the fish into thinking it’s a good imitation, tricos are on the prowl. I didn’t have much success dry fly fishing and from what I could see neither did other anglers.
As far as using nymphs to fish, there’s many options that are working. I suggest a 3 fly set up. Make sure you have an attracting fly to lead of like a stone fly (pats rubber leg) or even a San Juan in red, followed by a rainbow warrior or a pupae and finish it with a zebra midge or a chocolate thunder. I netted close to 25 fish all in a variety of rainbows, cutthroats and browns. Focus on pools and fast eddies and you should be set.
